It Started With 321 Birthday Cards!
For her 21st birthday, Katelyn had one special wish: to receive 321 birthday cards. The number had special meaning—3-21 represents the three copies of the 21st chromosome that characterizes Down syndrome, while also celebrating her 21st birthday.

What began as a simple birthday wish grew far beyond anything we imagined. Cards arrived from all 50 states, every continent and from 21 different countries, carrying messages of kindness, encouragement, and celebration from people around the world.

By our last documented count, Katelyn had received 8,113 birthday cards-and the cards were still coming. That extraordinary response became more than a birthday celebration. It showed us what can happen when people recognize an individual's abilities, celebrate their achievements, and see just how much one person can inspire others. That spirit became the inspiration for creating Breaking Through Boundaries. Katelyn’s story became the beginning of Breaking Through Boundaries, making her our very first Boundary Breaker.Â

Boundary Breaker #2
Different achievements. Different journeys. Limitless possibilities.

Boundary Breakers are individuals with Down syndrome whose achievements, milestones, talents, determination, and contributions deserve to be recognized and celebrated.

A Boundary Breaker doesn't have to set a world record or accomplish something extraordinary by someone else's standards. Achievement is personal. It might be completing a race, starting a job, creating art, learning a new skill, serving a community, graduating, performing on stage—or accomplishing a goal that once seemed out of reach.

Every achievement has a story. Every story can inspire someone else to believe in what is possible.
